The Deepwater Horizon Rig Contractors, and BP Cheapened The Drilling Process

NPR's Fresh Air program interviewed Henry Fountain, the NYT's science reporter, who speaks about deepwater drilling, and the problems with the Deepwater Horizon rig. BP ultimately cheapened the assembly process.

Boat captain's suicide shows human toll of Gulf oil disaster

By Brian Kelly, Pensacola News Journal
FOLEY, Ala. — Allen Kruse tenderly kissed his wife goodbye just after sunrise Wednesday and headed to the docks in Gulf Shores, Ala., where his boat, The Rookie, was moored.

A charter boat captain for 25 years, Kruse had signed on as a BP contractor to spot oil, deploy boom and eventually learn how to skim oil. His business had come to a screeching halt after the April 20 oil spill.

About an hour later, Kruse was dead. He was 55, the father of 11- and 12-year-old boys, Cory and Ryan, and daughter Kelli, 26.

About 7 a.m., after a BP training meeting, he climbed into the wheelhouse of his 46-foot charter boat and ended his worry, his frustration and his anger with a single bullet to the head.

"Nothing was easy working with BP. Everything was hard, and it consumed him. He wasn't crazy," said his wife, Tracy, 41, sitting outside the couple's home in Foley on Thursday.(SNIP)

New Evidence Suggests the Oil Spill in the Gulf Could only be the Beginning

Could it be true that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is only the beginning of what is being touted as possibly the worst possible natural disaster known to man? New evidence was unearthed during the week by U.S. scientists that indicate the warnings which surfaced as long as a year before the BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe occurred may well be true.

Unknown to the majority of the public, this particular area that was chosen by the BP geologists has been described as unstable and even dangerous due to the possible super sized methane beds embedded deep in the earths crust. Some geologists believed this to be so and voiced their opinions early on in the piece, but to no avail.

Now 12 scientists from the Texas A&M University who have been running tests in the area within a 5 mile radius of the drill site, have found levels of methane in the ocean that are through the roof. In some pockets of the ocean the concentrations of methane gas levels are up to 100,000 times the norm and even more incredibly up to 1 million times higher.

The effect of these levels of methane gas on the ocean can be devastating, as it depletes the oxygen in the water, and at these levels scientists say they could create a dead zone. Oxygenated water is crucial to sustaining marine life and in some close by areas of the well, it has found to have dropped by 30 percent.

As carbon dioxide is a by product of breathing in air, so methane is a natural by product of a breathing living ocean that is filled with life. Science has since proven that where higher concentrations of methane gas exist, there is a common side effect which occurs. The smaller microbes out grow the marine life dramatically and end up consuming much more oxygen.

Another factor that would contribute to positive signs of a large methane gas reservoir would be cracks or fissures appearing on the ocean bed near the capped well opening. The appearance of these cracks is now becoming evident from footage sent up by the underwater robots working on the damaged well.

Fissures of gas eruptions entering the ocean are also being reported further along the outer radius of the drill site. Scientists are still crunching the numbers on the data they have collected over the recently completed 10 day research expedition. More available facts should come to light within the week.

Corruption Suspected in Airlift of Billions in Cash From Kabul By MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL—More than $3 billion in cash has been openly flown out of Kabul International Airport in the past three years, a sum so large that U.S. investigators believe top Afghan officials and their associates are sending billions of diverted U.S. aid and logistics dollars and drug money to financial safe havens abroad.

The cash—packed into suitcases, piled onto pallets and loaded into airplanes—is declared and legal to move. But U.S. and Afghan officials say they are targeting the flows in major anticorruption and drug trafficking investigations because of their size relative to Afghanistan's small economy and the murkiness of their origins.

.Officials believe some of the cash, if not most, is siphoned from Western aid projects and U.S., European and NATO contracts to provide security, supplies and reconstruction work for coalition forces in Afghanistan. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization spent about $14 billion here last year alone. Profits reaped from the opium trade are also a part of the money flow, as is cash earned by the Taliban from drugs and extortion, officials say.

The amount declared as it leaves the airport is vast in a nation where the gross domestic product last year totaled $13.5 billion. More declared cash flies out of Kabul each year than the Afghan government collects in tax and customs revenue nationwide. "It's not like they grow money on trees here," said a U.S. official investigating corruption and Taliban financing. "A lot of this looks like our tax dollars being stolen. And opium, of course."

Most of the funds passing through the airport are being moved by often-secretive outfits called "hawalas," private money transfer businesses with roots in the Muslim world stretching back centuries, officials say.(SNIP)

Obama Calls for Pentagon “Civilian Component”

Once again, Obama has called for a civilian component to work with the Pentagon.

Once again, Obama has called for a civilian component to work with the Pentagon.

Speaking at a town hall event in Racine, Wisconsin, on July 31 Obama said U.S. troops are carrying too much of the burden in Iraq and Afghanistan and doing too many things that are more appropriate for civilians, such as building schools and setting up justice systems, according to the Associated Press. He called for a civilian component as large as the military.

“We just got to be smart about using all the elements of American power, not just one element of American power,” he said. “The problem is — is that we don’t have a civilian effort that has always matched up to the military effort. So the military goes in there, they clear out everything, they’re — they’re making everything secure, and now the question is, all right, can we get the civilians to come in to work with the local governments to improve the situation? And a lot of times that civilian side of it has been under-resourced.”

On the campaign trail in 2008, Obama called for a civilian national security force double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation’s military. “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,” Obama said in Colorado Springs on July 2, 2008.

The idea of sending civilians to Iraq and Afghanistan is not new. In 2007, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said defeating terrorism will require the use of more “soft power,” with civilians contributing more in communication, economic assistance, political development and other non-military areas. “Gates called for the creation of new government organizations, including a permanent group of civilian experts with a wide range of expertise who could be sent abroad on short notice as a supplement to U.S. military efforts. And he urged more involvement by university and other private experts,” the Associated Press reported in late 2007.

In 2005, the Office of Personnel Management partnered with the Department of Homeland Security to create a “21st century human resources management system that fully supports the Department’s vital mission,” according to then Office of Personnel Management Associate Director for Strategic Human Resources Policy Ron Sanders.

At approximately the same time, the DoD issued a Defense Directive 1404.10 (read PDF) that establishes a “DoD Civilian Expeditionary Workforce” and rescinds a prior Clinton era directive dealing with the emergency use of civilian personnel. The Obama administration describes the Civilian Expeditionary Workforce as follows:

Members of the DoD Civilian Expeditionary Workforce shall be organized, trained, cleared, equipped, and ready to deploy in support of combat operations by the military; contingencies; emergency operations; humanitarian missions; disaster relief; restoration of order; drug interdiction; and stability operations of the Department of Defense in accordance with DoDD 3000.05

Spectre,

Thanks for all the great links you have been sending. It appears that our military, and CIC are preparing for the coming depression by training allied troops to assist our HLS troops, since many of our own are over in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting the USeless Wars.

It is clear that the economy is slowing down before it pulls into the Recession Station and begins to back up.

I have been very busy fighting a Walmart Superstore development project in my community and have not responded on the comment page. http://www.moonfirst.us

I have been writing a piece to post, and have used some of your forwards.

Many of us know, as you surely do, that shit is coming, and it might be messy.

Thanks, jerry
